MESSAGE from Coach about summer captains practices:

Captains Practices are a good way to get to know some of your possible future teammates and get into shape.  Because there are many new recruits this season, I unfortunately cannot keep them all.  I have 20 returning oarsmen without any novices (new people).  We will be making cuts, and those that are not prepared will be the first to go.  Crew is a grueling sport that looks graceful and pretty, but it is actually very difficult to accomplish the precision and attention to detail needed to make it work.  We will be doing daily runs, cali's, and workouts besides rowing.  The first day you will run 3 miles, with a timed 1 mile.  We will also be testing and recording fitness results.  Being a PE teacher at the high school, and coaching for over 30 years, I know what it takes to have a strong team.  Please be prepared to excel.  Mr. Moriarty is my Women's Assistant Coach and Mr. Carr is the Men's Assistant Coach - all of us look forward to working with you and having a strong group of novices.  Please look through the rest of this website to learn more about what we are all about.

"Rowing is more than a fast boat on race day. It is a complementary experience to a young man's intellectual development. Rowing, like success, is a journey, not a destination. I tell my oarsmen to have fun, learn and, most of all, grow as individuals. The wins, the losses will take care of themselves.”

Rick Clother, USNA
