2010:

Calendar Raffle WINNERS and Calendar Raffle Prize Calendar, Sponsors

Shrewsbury Crew began selling the much anticipated 2010 Calendar Raffle on April 2nd and will continue through April 28th.  The Calendar Raffle is in its 5th year and was very well received last year with winners receiving quite generous prizes from Red Sox, Celtics, and Bruins tickets to fine dining and weekend getaways.  $10.00 will buy you 31 lucky days of chances to win!

Shrewsbury Crew founded in 1937 by Kenneth F. Burns has enjoyed a successful history here in town, with girls crew being added in 1975 by Burns' daughter, Barbara Caron and now still in the family is Caron's daughter Pam and her husband Russ Krause.  Boys and Girls enjoy both Fall and Spring Crew.

The sport of rowing is very expensive due to the high costs of shells, oars, maintenance and related equipment.  The Calendar Raffle is the team's main fundraiser for the year.  Purchase your ticket now from a team member or call Janet Johnson at (508) 925-4576.

See here for ticket seller awards!

Calendar Raffle:  Our winners for the 1st returned tickets with sales of 15 tickets each were: Brent Martin, Andrew Cohen, Julia Johnson, Ally Nylen, Spencer Babst, Taylor Swenson, William Chan, Ryan Leonard, Nick Tebbetts, Katherine Pederson, Ali Lampson, Stephanie Moriarty, Jackie Quirion, Courtney Fallon, and James Glynn.  These rowers will receive a T-shirt and a grab in the money box!  Keep on Selling!

SHS Alumni Student Grant Program

This year, the Alumni Association's Grant Program celebrated its 15th year of existence and has funded over $52,000 back to Shrewsbury High School student programs where an estimated 25,000 students have benefited.  Funds distributed are primarily received from a variety of graduating classes at reunion time and SHS Alum making personal donations.  The purpose of the Alumni Grant program is to assist students in achieving their project goals by providing them with seed money to get their project off the ground and running.

On November 17, 2009, Sandra J. Lucas, SHS Alumni Grant Chairperson, presented the 2009-2010 Alumni Grant Recipients in the Anthony J. Bent presentation room at Shrewsbury High School.  Over fifty faculty, students, parents and friends attended this year’s Alumni Grant Awards Ceremony.  Seventeen SHS Student Grant Projects where funded between $100 and $400 for their projects and grant certificates where awarded.  Many of these projects support a variety of educational and community opportunities ranging from cultural programs, research materials, artist supplies, audio/ visual supplies, state and local competitions, charitable giving, and a variety of other projects.

LANYARD UPDATE: Each rower was given two lanyards to sell this week for $5 each.  This is a small fundraiser and most of the lanyards were already sold by parent volunteers.  Please make sure you return $10 by next Thursday (Oct 22) so we can make a full profit on this sale.  Friends of Shrewsbury Crew keeps our program up and running by updating and maintaining equipment.  Crew is an expensive sport with the cost of an eight boat at more than $32,000 without oars!  Every amount of money we raise benefits our program and keeps us competitive.  We are one of 21 public high schools in the state with a crew program and many of our students have gone on to college with scholarships for rowing.  Please make sure you return your money to a team captain this week!

(Thanks to Alison Huck, Diane O'Keefe, Lia Fong-Martin, Robin Babst, Lynn Colicchio, and Colleen Glynn who volunteered to sell lanyards during spirit week.  Thanks to Janet Johnson for organizing this fundraiser)

First Annual Athletes in the Community-SHS Crew Team Community Service Project

A Success!

What a great job all our student athletes did!  They arose to the occasion on this one.  The First Annual Athletes in the Community-SHS Crew Team Community Service Project was a success.  The weather gave us a break, everyone showed up and most with rakes.  As I went from house to house I was impressed with the cooperation and commitment to getting the work done.  Particularly impressive was the work site with over 30 leaf bags and a brush pile 4-5' high and the site with a 10' trench the kids had to climb down into.  Several of the homeowners expressed their thanks for a job well done and greatly needed by the homeowner.

Thank you to the coaches, Deb Silverberg and Carolyn Lavin (parent volunteers) for helping me monitor the work sites and a special thank you to Sue Chatten for her all around support and help in connecting with the Senior Center staff.

We plan to continue with another service project during the Fall season.
